Panic with a Chance of Concern

Cause of Death: Puncture wound to the stomach

That was what Annabeth was greeted with when she entered work. The autopsy of Mr. Evans laid on her desk. Flipping the file open, everything fell into her lap. Not literally but figuratively, She now knew the details. All the gory details. With that in mind, a part of her started to wonder if this would make her a target of some kind.

Thinking back to the invitation she received from Lamar just yesterday. If Lamar could find her and already knew what she knew about Mr. Evans, so could the killer. If they were still even out there. In her state of panic, Annabeth considered not attending Lamar’s get together at Alice’s 24 hour dinner. What if Lamar was actually the killer and he was trying to throw everyone off by seeing how much they knew. And then he would also killed whoever knew the most. Annabeth’s level of panic increases significantly, considering the fact that she probably knew the most as someone with the autopsy right in front of her.

“Nurse Willis?”

Someone calling her name broke Annabeth from her state of panic and brought her back to reality.

It came again, “Nurse Willis?”

Annabeth snapped her head in the direction of the door only to find the head doctor at MADO, Doctor Erik Borden.

“Are you alright, Nurse Willis?” Doctor Borden asked, concerned.

“I’m fine,” She replied, “Not enough coffee.” She laughed and gestured to the empty mug sitting on her desk. Doctor Borden looked at her for a second, as if he didn’t quite believe her. Annabeth stared back at him for a second hoping he would believe her, she didn’t think she would be able to explain the truth.

“You next patient is here.” Doctor Borden said after seconds of silence. Annabeth internally sighed of relief.

“Thanks Doctor Borden,” She smiled at him. “I’ll be right there.” Closing the autopsy, she left her office grabbing her stethoscope as she brushed past Doctor Borden.

On the way home, it was decided that she would go to Lamar’s thing at the dinner. She wanted to know more, more than just the medial details. Deep down she still wanted to know if her suspension of Lamar was even in the ballpark. And with that Annabeth went to her apartment to remove her scrubs and minutes later she left for Alice’s.

Irony with a Chance of Realization

It was impossible to see anything. Annabeth peered out her apartment window, an action that seemed to happen everyday. A thick fog had completely covered the entire town. Laughing to herself, Annabeth thought about the contrast between the illuminating event that only occurred days before and the fog that left everything dark. It was ironic really, how the shooting star lit up the town bringing hopes and wishes with it, now the town was in an opposite state. It was almost as if someone with a larger look at life was laughing at the town for thinking that our problems could be solved by simply wishing on a star. With that positive note in mind, Annabeth got ready to leave for work, giving herself a few extra minutes due to the fog. Her hand was on the doorknob when she noticed the newspaper that was delivered that morning. When it was delivered earlier that morning, Annabeth wasn’t awake enough to actually read the cover page. Now, as it sat on the table by her front door, Annabeth got ...

Disappointment with a Chance of Shock

Lamar’s meet up was a bust. Nobody really knew anything, Annabeth was disappointed. She was hoping for more details about Mr. Evans but she got nothing. Her suspicions about Lamar were now just a fleeting thought. At the diner, Lamar looked as frustrated as Annabeth felt now. It was clear to her now that Lamar was not the killer and he just wanted to catch the killer. The disappointment Annabeth felt was a brief feeling. It was mulled over before she fell asleep that night but was gone the next day. It wasn’t until she walked into work that she was reminded of everything and Mr. Evans. There sitting in her office was one of the police officers, Annabeth thought her name was Linh, maybe. She wasn’t quite sure, like her the officer was new to this town. “Good Morning, Nurse Willis,” the officer said to Annabeth as she entered her office. “Good Morning,” Annabeth paused not wanting to get her name wrong. “Officer…” “Officer Luong,” the officer finished for Annabeth. “But ple...

Thoughts with a Chance of Wishing

The news of the excitement that would come that night first came to Annabeth at work. At work where she still glanced at the autopsy of Mr. Evans wondering what was going to happen now that the police had more information about his death. Pondering the next moves of her new police officer friend, Linh, Annabeth was startled by the sound of someone entering her office. It was one of the fellow nurses, informing her about the shooting star that would across over the town. The gears inside Annabeth’s head began to spin. What should she wish for? Was there anything she wanted enough to wish upon a star? As Annabeth racked her brain, she could sense that everyone in the town was doing the same thing as her. Trying to find the best wish for the situation. One half of Annabeth wanted to wish for something material, like new shoes or a raise at work. But the other half knew there was something more sentimental she could wish for. The sentimental half won. Peering out her window, Annabet...
